Following the Paris Agreement adopted in 2015, 184 countries have submitted their first set of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), which outline how each country intends to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and adapt to the effects of climate change.

Even if fully achieved, these national GHG emission reduction goals are cumulatively not ambitious enough to achieve the overarching goal of the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to well below two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Nevertheless, the Paris Agreement expects all countries to regularly increase the ambitions of their NDCs, and many countries are preparing to submit revised NDCs in 2020.

The NDC Partnership (NDCP) is a global coalition of 138 member countries and institutions working to mobilise support for NDC planning and implementation to achieve ambitious climate goals. Since its inception in 2016, the NDCP has supported over 40 countries.

The NDCP recently launched the Climate Action Enhancement Package (CAEP), which will provide fast and effective technical support, to assist countries in revising their NDCs. NDCP member countries are invited to apply for support for NDC revision during two six-week application windows; the first one is ending on 8 August 2019 and the second one is planned for October 2019. The NDCP member institutions either will be able to apply to serve these support requests, through resources from their existing support programmes or from the CAEP-dedicated Technical Assistance Fund (TAF).

The IKI has been supporting numerous countries in developing and revising their NDCs and intends to provide additional resources to the total value of up to five million Euro to expand its support for NDC revisions until 2020. Several key IKI implementing agencies are set to receive this additional funding to support selected country requests submitted to the CAEP. The selection of countries will depend on country requests, as well as on the relevant experience and expertise of the implementing agencies. Included in the contribution to the CAEP, the IKI also intends to support the TAF with an amount of 500,000 Euro for technical assistance.
