REDD+, the mechanism for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, can do more than mitigate climate change. If prudently planned and implemented, the protection, sustainable use and rehabilitation of tropical forests can have additional positive effects, particularly on biological diversity. To bring about such benefits, REDD+ projects need reliable geographical information systems with digital maps and databases that clearly convey information on the landscape, vegetation or settlements in the relevant areas.
Two of the projects supported by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) have now used such information systems to research the opportunities and the risks of REDD+ activities for biological diversity in Viet Nam. The two IKI projects pooled their respective regional and expert knowledge to prepare this study. One project is advising the Vietnamese Government on how to mainstream the conservation of biological diversity in their REDD+ strategy. The other is utilising integrated land use modelling to disseminate information to policy-makers around the world as a basis for developing national and regional rules for REDD+.
Through IKI, the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) fosters cooperation among projects in order to spread knowledge, encourage innovation and boost the impact of individual projects.
