International Climate Initiative at Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum

Climate change is one of the most important social and political themes of recent years, and one that features in the media every day. This year's Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum was therefore focusing on issues related to climate change and its presence in the media. The forum entitled The Heat is on - Climate Change and the Media was held in Bonn from 21 to 23 June 2010 and was attended by some 1,300 participants from all over the world. In presentations, panel discussions and workshops, high-ranking speakers addressed the way in which this complex subject is covered in the media, and looked into campaigns and other specific aspects.

The International Climate Initiative (ICI) was also represented at the Global Media Forum. Norbert Gorißen, Head of Division at the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) and responsible for the initiative, contributed to the workshop Ideas For A Cooler World on the third day of the event. This workshop concerned itself with the Deutsche Welle multimedia project Global Ideas>, which BMU promotes within ICI. Deutsche Welle provides information about model climate protection projects from all over the world in 50 multilingual reports and five 30-minute documentations, and presents more detailed background information on the related website. This raises awareness of the climate change issue among international viewers and acquaints them with possible solutions.
