In the run-up to the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) have jointly organised the discussion forum 'Cool and sustainable - cooling in international cooperation' which will take place on 31 May 2012 at the GIZ Representation in Berlin. The purpose of the event is to highlight innovative measures and industrial developments in the area of refrigeration and cooling that can support sustainable development in emerging and developing economies. Related International Climate Initiative (ICI) projects will also be presented at the event.
The growing demand for cooling technologies involves far-reaching climate protection challenges because the energy consumption tied with this is increasing dramatically. In addition, coolants that damage the ozone layer and contribute to global warming with their high greenhouse gas potentials are still frequently used. To solve this problem, the technologies must be converted to use natural coolants and must also become more energy and resource efficient. Through the ICI, the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) is supporting some successful pilot projects for adapting the industrial manufacturing process to produce cooling units that run on climate-friendly coolants rather than halogenated ones. Projects like these can be reproduced elsewhere, thus instigating a systemic change in the industrial cooling sectors in other countries. ICI-supported projects related to cooling and cooling unit recycling reduce harmful fluorinated greenhouse gas emissions and also save energy when compared with traditional refrigerant technologies.
The event in Berlin brings together representatives from industry, research and politics to provide a forum for exchanging strategies and forming networks for innovation.
Time: 31 May 2012, 10:00-14:00
