At the initiative of the Peruvian Ministry of Environment, a workshop was held in Lima on 14 and 15 March to provide training in the development of nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs). The workshop, which took place within the framework of the International Partnership on Mitigation and MRV, was jointly organised by various International Climate Initiative (ICI) projects, together with the UNDP Low-Emission Capacity Building Programme (LECB), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and Ecofys’ Mitigation Momentum Project.

Participants from nine Peruvian ministries worked together with selected representatives from the private sector, civil society and the scientific community to develop concrete proposals for NAMAs in the bioenergy, transport and construction sectors, using a ten-step process. They also drafted a roadmap, made suggestions on how responsibilities for the further development and implementation of their proposals might be assigned, and identified potential obstacles to progress and areas where support is required.

The conclusions reached by the various working groups will inform the work of the individual ICI projects in the partner countries. The workshop has stimulated a lively exchange of ideas and has shown that there is potential for establishing a cross-sector, multi-actor platform for cooperation on common NAMA-related issues.
