RSPB awards medal to HRH The Prince of Wales

On 25 February 2011 Britain’s Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) presented HRH The Prince of Wales with the RSPB Medal in recognition of the Prince’s conservation efforts, particularly his long-standing commitment to protecting tropical forests. In the past His Royal Highness had also been engaged in the International Climate Initiative (ICI) project in the Harapan Rainforest, which the RSPB and the German Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) are implementing in Indonesia together with KfW Entwicklungsbank. During the award ceremony at his official residence, the Clarence House, the Prince of Wales was informed of the latest developments in the project, which he has personally visited, and pledged his continued support for the protection of tropical forests.
The project on the Indonesian island of Sumatra serves to protect the Harapan Rainforest, which covers an area of almost 1,000 square kilometres, and represents the first-time application of Indonesia’s new law on restoring ecosystems in commercial forests. It is already considered in Indonesia to be an exemplary project and is attracting strong public interest. More than 20 other organisations have already applied for approval for similar initiatives.
