Climate Negotiation

UN Climate Change Conference in Bonn - how ICI projects contribute to the negotiation process

To finance its activities, ICI uses funds raised from the auction of emissions trading certificates, thus demonstrating itself how climate protection can be financed. ICI is also part of the German 'fast start' contribution.

ICI projects show how international climate protection accords can be implemented in practice. For example they develop methods for measuring, reporting and verifying (MRV) climate protection measures and on shaping a future regime for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+).

Moreover, several projects are directly linked to preparation for meetings of the Conference of the Parties. They give targeted support to partner countries in the form of negotiations training and networking measures, and they help develop national and regional positions.

Side event on low carbon development strategies

The Cancún Agreements call for a paradigm shift towards a low-carbon society and  provide a key opportunity for parties to address climate change more effectively in the context of national development priorities. The ICI and the EU-UNDP Programme contribute to capacity building efforts to support the preparation and implementation of low carbon development strategies (LCDS), one element of the Cancún Agreements which is relevant to all states. LCDS represent a crucial instrument for the design and implementation of mitigation measures.

The side event organised by organised by the ICI and the EU-UNDP Climate Change Capacity Building Programme seeks to facilitate an exchange of experiences from three countries on their approaches to designing LCDS. This includes also Nationally Appropriate MitigationActions (NAMAs) and Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) of mitigationmeasures, as well as on initial lessons learned.
