Empowering LDCs and SIDS Leadership for High Level Negotiations on Climate Change

The project aimed to strengthen the capacities of chief negotiators and political representatives from LDCs and SIDS to enable them to be more proactive in top-level international climate negotiations. Policy and strategy guidelines were being drawn up for this purpose. The project was carrying out strategy, training and evaluation sessions in the context of the meetings of the Conference of the Parties (COP) and the meetings of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP).

State of implementation/results

  • Project completed
  • Inception Workshop in August 2013 in St. Lucia. A “ministerial statement” appreciating the project was released
  • 14 additional workshops for high-level climate negotiators conducted to support the development of negotiation strategies and to improve negotiation skills.
  • More than 40 briefing papers on key issues of the UNFCCC negotiations supplied.
  • During COP 21 SIDS were consulted on central issues (part. on 1.5 degree target), which the Paris Agreement took into consideration.
