Restoring peatlands and applying concepts for sustainable management in Belarus

Objective and activities

The project demonstrated how greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced and biodiversity increased by means of rewetting and sustainable management of degraded peatlands covering an area of around 17,000 ha. The project partners developed an appropriate methodology and suitable financing mechanisms.

State of implementation/results

  • Project completed
  • 17,197 hectares of peatland rewetted
  • Framework largely created for the potential trading of CO2 certificates
  • Plant built to manufacture biomass briquettes
  • Handbook “Carbon Credits from Peatland Rewetting” produced and presented at the “International Conference on the Conservation and Sustainable Management of Wetlands in the transboundary context” in Minsk
