Water and Wastewater Companies for Climate Mitigation (WaCCliM)

Objective and activities

The project is helping to reduce the carbon footprint of water and waste water utilities in Jordan, Mexico, Peru and Thailand. To this end, it is implementing technologies in pilot companies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, such as water loss reduction systems, energy-efficient pumps, biogas generation and fertiliser production from wastewater. At national level, the project advises the countries in developing financial mechanisms and political frameworks for replicating demonstration projects. Knowledge exchange between the pilot companies and national and regional associations as well as a web-based knowledge platform facilitate the further development and dissemination of technologies that reduce greenhouse gases. In this way, the project also helps to improve climate change mitigation strategies for water and waste water utilities and to disseminate them internationally.

State of implementation/results

  • Development of criteria for pilot companies and systems concluded
  • Selection of water and sanitation companies and pilot systems concluded in coordination with the partners
  • Analysis of the political/institutional frameworks for reducing GHG emissions resulting from the operation of water and sanitation companies concluded
  • Studies carried out to quantify the baseline and the exact mitigation potential of the selected companies
  • Option studies carried out to develop measures for GHG reduction based on the available technologies, which are adapted to the local conditions and demand
  • Water and sanitation companies advised on identifying, financing and implementing model projects
  • Training of staff of the pilot water and sanitation companies in applying and operating climate-friendly technologies initiated
  • Advisory services initiated on the development of monitoring systems for measuring success
  • Advisory services initiated on establishing country-specific financing mechanisms that support the implementation of climate-friendly technologies (e.g. perfomance/service contracting, integration in national programmes, revolving funds, etc.)
  • Preparation of investment projects (bankable projects) initiated
  • International guidelines and fact sheets as well as outreach materials based on these currently in development
  • Establishment of an internet-based learning and information platform for the CO2 neutrality of water and sanitation companies initiated
