Strengthening the national park system to foster climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation (Colombia)
Objective and activities
The project is supporting Colombia's national park authority to develop and implement effective protection mechanisms in the Amazon's Chiribiquete National Park. In addition, it is contributing to the implementation of the national biodiversity strategy, the consolidation and expansion of the national system of protected areas, and the establishment of multi-stakeholder dialogue platforms. It is strengthening the partner structures within the environment and agriculture ministries in relation to the implementation of and adherence to protection arrangements. An agreement between relevant economic and political actors should be initiated, aimed at controlling the spread of agricultural areas in Colombia's Amazon region. It is assumed that simply increasing the capacities of the park authority will not be sufficient to effectively protect the national parks from an (agriculture-driven) invasion.
Lessons learned will be fed into the national decision-making processes on nature conservation and agriculture, as well as the national action plan for the climate change adaptation system. These experiences will also be disseminated to other parts of the country as well as internationally. Strengthening the national park authority generates positive effects for the protection of other parks in Colombia.
