Developing proposals for country-specific climate action (NAMAs)

Objective and activities

The project supported Chile in developing nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs) and strengthening national climate policy processes. In particular, it tested a participative approach to NAMA development, resulting in a concrete NAMA proposal. In this work, sectors that were relevant to NAMA development and implementation were first selected in consultation with the Chilean Government. Project partners then identified various NAMA options within the jointly prioritised sector (transport). These were then examined in an extended consultation process with various stakeholders and further developed where appropriate.

State of implementation/results

  • Project completed
  • Four NAMA options for the transport sector have been developed: transport management, energy efficiency, shift to environmentally friendly modes of transport, zero and low-emission vehicles
  • NAMA strategy for implementing a green transport zone in Santiago formulated
  • Detailed NAMA proposal on promoting electromobility in the context of the Chilean policy on zero and low-emission vehicles has been developed
  • Climate policy processes in Chile, especially those related to NAMA development, have been strengthened by building expertise
