Strengthening the national park system to foster climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation
Objective and activities
The project supported Colombia’s national park authority to develop and implement effective protection mechanisms in the Amazon’s Chiribiquete National Park. It contributed to the implementation of the national biodiversity strategy, the consolidation and expansion of the national system of protected areas, and the establishment of multi-stakeholder dialogue platforms. It strengthened the partner structures within the environment and agriculture ministries in relation to the implementation of and adherence to protection arrangements. An agreement between relevant economic and political actors was initiated, aimed at controlling the spread of agricultural areas in Colombia’s Amazon region. Lessons learned were fed into the national decision-making processes on nature conservation and agriculture, and the national action plan for the climate change adaptation system. These experiences were disseminated nationally as well as internationally.
