Protected Area Management Enhancement in the Philippines (PAME)


Objective and activities

The project is supporting the Philippine Government in implementing the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) by cooperating with local partners to improve the legal framework for protecting and managing designated protected zones in marine and terrestrial 'key biodiversity areas'. These areas are of particular international significance in conserving biodiversity. The project enhances the protected area management capacity of the Philippine environment ministry through training measures and workshops for sharing experience. In addition, it is helping to improve administrative structures and processes in existing protected areas and establish new terrestrial and marine protected areas. In this work, it is cooperating closely with local communities and giving particular consideration to the concerns of women and indigenous populations.

State of implementation/results

  • About 6000 participants took part in 141 training courses and other capacity building events on various topics (e.g. economic valuations of protected areas).
  • Current management effectiveness has been recorded and evaluated in a nationwide survey in 61 protected areas
  • A strategy with specific selection criteria has been produced with a view to establishing 100 new protected areas.
  • Elaboration of a communications strategy.
