Knowledge gained from five years of greenhouse gas inventories in the forestry and agricultural sector
During the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Warsaw, the Capacity-Development for REDD project held a side event in the EU Pavilion. Participants recalled the progress made in establishing national systems for monitoring greenhouse gas emissions in the agricultural, forestry and land-use sector.
On 15 November 2013, during the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Warsaw, the Capacity Development for REDD project (CD-REDD) held a side event in the EU Pavilion.
The project has been ongoing since 2008 and is receiving EUR 4.1 million from the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Environment Ministry (BMU). The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, the Coalition for Rainforest Nations (CfRN) and the Thünen Institute (TI) are responsible for its implementation. CD-REDD supports a total of 14 partner countries in Africa and South America in developing, introducing and operating national systems for monitoring greenhouse gas emissions in the agricultural, forestry and land-use sector.
Horst Freiberg, Head of Division for Forest Conservation and Sustainable Forest Management at BMU, opened the event in Warsaw in front of about 60 guests and praised the progress made in the project. Next, participants from Ghana, Guyana, Namibia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo reflected upon the progress made in their countries. Among other things, their presentations covered the concrete measures and outcomes of the project as well as the individual challenges and potential solutions in their countries, such as the limited availability of data and other necessary resources. During the event, the delegates from the partner countries expressed deep appreciation for the work carried out.
