Bringing clean, electric cooking to schools in Lumbini, Bagmati and Gandaki to curb deforestation
Although almost all households in Nepal have access to electricity, most public schools still cook using firewood, which encourages deforestation and causes air pollution. The project works with local governments to equip 80 schools with electric cooking stoves and train the users (the kitchen staff) in the use of these cookers. At the same time, the project ensures that schools have a safe and stable electricity supply, and if necessary improves the electricity connection the electricity connection to enable electric cooking. Additionally, the project provides awareness raising activities to inform about the positive aspects of electric cooking to local communities. The project thus leads to reduced greenhouse gas emissions, reduced air pollution and less deforestation pressure. In addition, the project will promote the concept of electric cooking in the region so that other schools can apply for funding for electric cookers.
