Interview with IKI project implementing organisation – Humboldt Viadrina Governance Platform gGmbH

Aleksandra Zebrowska from Humboldt-Viadrina Governance Platform, an implementing organisation based in Germany shares with us their first achievements of the project and future project targets.

What is "Climate Transparency" about?

The IKI project "Climate Transparency: National engagement in seven G20 emerging economies" was launched in March 2018. It is a global partnership that brings together experts from research organisations and NGOs from the majority of the G20 countries with a mission to encourage ambitious climate action in these countries: we inform policy makers and stimulate national debate.

One of our major achievements was the publication of "Brown to Green Report 2018: The G20 Transition to a low-carbon economy" with support of the BMU-IKI. This report is the world's most comprehensive annual review of G20 climate action. We provide concise and comparable information on mitigation, finance, policies and vulnerability based on around 80 indicators. The report is available on the Climate Transparency website and can be downloaded for free.  

Who are the target groups of the annual "Brown to Green Report"?

The main target groups of the report are governments, policy experts, think tanks, academia, civil society and the media in the participating countries (Argentina, Brazil, India, Indonesia, South Africa and Mexico) and in other G20 countries, where we also have partners.

We put a lot of importance on communication. Our Brown to Green Report 2018 has been presented and well-attended during an international webinar, in partner countries and also during the UN Climate Change Conference in Katowice in Poland. 

What makes your project unique?

We bring together information from a large number of sources, we cover most aspects of the climate debate, we present our information in an attractive way and we make sure that it reaches important decision makers through directly contacting them. Our partners bring in their perspective, so the report represents a global perspective.

Who develops the report's structure and who participates in its preparation?

All partners play an active role in the development of the report with the Climate Transparency Secretariat coordinating this work. Important decisions are made at the monthly Steering Group meetings, in which all partners participate.

What are the next steps or activities of the project?

Three of our partners (South Africa, Indonesia and India) have formed a group to compare the coal phase out options in their respective countries. They will present their results in the coming months and will participate in each other's events. Similarly, partners from Argentina, Brazil and Mexico have worked together on energy transition and will present their results in the coming months.

Climate Transparency will also participate in events around the G20 Summit in Japan and we have already started the work on our 2019 report and have intensive discussions, how we could further improve the report.
