SAMPeat – Global approaches on high-elevation and low-latitude peatlands with focus on South American mountain and Patagonian peatlands for people and nature

In South America, mountain and Patagonian peatlands are especially important for storing carbon, reducing flood risks, and providing clean water during dry periods, sustaining watersheds, local communities, and downstream cities. Despite their value, these peatlands face growing threats from overgrazing, drainage, agriculture, fire, and extraction. This project enhances conservation, sustainable management, and restoration by improving data, knowledge, policies, incentives, and finance. Working with governments, communities, scientists, and civil society, it strengthens stewardship and ensure these ecosystems continue to deliver essential services and climate benefits for future generations.
