Protecting and restoring habitats
Prioritised field of action in the IKI funding area of biodiversity conservation (last updated: July 2025)

In the field of action of protecting and restoring habitats, the International Climate Initiative (IKI) supports selected partner countries, for example with regard to the implementation of the so-called spatial targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).
These comprise, among other things
- participatory and integrated spatial planning and management processes that incorporate biological diversity,
- the restoration of at least 30 per cent of degraded areas by 2030 as well as
- the conservation of 30 per cent of land and marine areas by 2030.
The approaches of the IKI
In the opinion of the IKI, the restoration and effective conservation of habitats can only work hand in hand with local people. Therefore, in this field of action, the IKI supports the intelligent combination of legal requirements that are adapted to realities on site with an increase in the awareness of the actors concerned.
In addition, it also promotes effective incentive systems for the protection and sustainable use of ecosystems, the piloting and scaling-up of suitable approaches such as the funding of sustainable business models and the necessary capacity building.
The IKI also focuses on the implementation of the landscape approach in order to guarantee the integrity and functionality of ecosystems and the necessary connectivity between natural habitats. However the focus also lies on being able to take the relevant actors of particular territory into consideration and balance out their needs and interests.
Selected projects
- Operationalising the landscape approach for biodiversity and benefits: Policy, practice and people
- Protected areas and other area-based conservation measures at the level of local governments
- Central Asian Desert Initiative (CADI) – conservation and sustainable use of winter-cold deserts in Central Asia
- Living Landscapes - Securing ecological connectivity of high conservation value areas in Bhutan
Funding area
The IKI Strategy
The IKI wants to maximise its impact on climate action and biodiversity conservation. To this end, it concentrates its funding activities on prioritised fields of action within the four funding areas. Another key element is the close cooperation with selected partner countries, especially with the IKI’s priority countries.
