IKI Medium Grants for 2022 now open

IKI Medium Grants 2022 Call now open

Funding is available for projects designed to develop local climate action measures by and for young people as well as innovative cooperation between civil society and the private sector.

The next round of the IKI Medium Grants has begun. Together with the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) and the Federal Foreign Office, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK) has launched a new call for funding for small-scale projects, with proposals being sought for projects in developing and emerging countries. The IKI Medium Grants programme is seeking out ideas worldwide for projects to involve young people in the generation-appropriate design of national climate goals and for integrated biodiversity and climate protection in cooperation between civil society and the private sector.

The selection procedure started on 13 September 2022 and the invitation to tender will run until 13 December 2022. A maximum of ten projects worth up to 6.5 million euros in public funding will be selected. A grant of between 300,000 and a maximum of 800,000 euros may be granted per project. Work on projects funded through the programme should be completed within a period of 24 months to a maximum of 36 months, with no follow-up funding from the IKI. The first phase of the procedure is designed as a call for project ideas, with interested implementing organisations invited to submit innovative project outlines. Project outlines undergo several stages of formal and expert review before being selected. All lead implementing organisations that submitted project outlines will be notified about the outcome of the initial evaluation in writing, with a request that they then submit a detailed project proposal.

Funding objectives

The IKI Medium Grants programme welcomes the submission of applications involving the use of pilot projects and aim at capacity-building in partner countries. The funding priorities are as follows:

  1. Accelerating towards net-zero emissions: Empowering youth-led initiatives for climate change mitigation
  2. Innovative collaborations between civil society and the private sector for integrated biodiversity and climate protection

IKI Medium Grants funds organisations and institutions based in Germany

IKI Medium Grants support project activities that address innovative, bottom-up contributions to implementing the Paris Agreement and the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Those eligible for funding through this programme include non-profit civil society organisations (non-governmental organisations, associations, foundations, think tanks) and academic institutions (universities and research institutions), as well as non-profit companies that have a registered office in Germany at the time of the grant approval. These organisations must enter into a partnership with one or two local implementing organisations based in the implementing country or region.

English-language project outlines can be submitted until 13 December 2022 (23:59 CET) via the IKI online platform.
