IKI implementing organisation receives Kenton Miller Award

Burung Indonesia is an implementing agency for several projects supported by the German Environment Ministry. The organisation is the current recipient of the renowned Kenton Miller Award.

The Indonesian non-governmental organisation Burung Indonesia is the recipient of the 2014 Kenton Miller Award. The presentation of the renowned award took place at the end of the year in front of a large audience at the IUCN World Parks Congress in Sydney, Australia. The annual USD 5,000 prize supports innovative and successful strategies around the world for conserving and protecting ecosystems.

Burung Indonesia is one of the implementing organisations being supported financially by the German Environment Ministry (BMUB) in carrying out projects. The Indonesian non-governmental organisation received the award for its innovative approach to conserving forest ecosystems in its country. The presenters of the award affirmed how its work has brought about changes in Indonesian environmental policy and legislation for the benefit of sustainable forest management. For the Committee of the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA), the multiplier effect of the project as a model for subsequent projects in Indonesia and the region carried particular weight. Furthermore, the work carried out by Burung Indonesia makes a significant contribution to the achievement of Indonesia's commitments within the UN biodiversity convention.

As part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI), Burung Indonesia implemented the project Harapan Rainforest – Pilot Restauration of a Degraded Forest Ecosystem on Sumatra, which ended in December 2013. Numerous measures for combating the causes of deforestation and forest degradation were implemented to protect the Harapan Rainforest region. More than 170 jobs were created in the area of forest protection and extensive areas of previously degraded rainforest were restored. The Harapan Rainforest was the first project for the implementation of a new Indonesian law on the restoration of ecosystems. Currently Burung Indonesia is taking part in the implementation of the IKI project Nature Conservation Concessions to Protect Tropical Rainforests in Indonesia. This project promotes and supports the application of ecosystem restoration concessions (ECR) or comparable land-use strategies in order to conserve endangered rainforests.
