German-Thai Steering Committee held a meeting during the COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh
The International Climate Initiative also used the COP27 to share experiences and exchange information with representatives from Thailand, one of the 14 IKI priority countries.
A joint German-Thai steering committee exists for the regular exchange on IKI cooperation and on learning experiences and challenges in climate action and biodiversity conservation. This steering committee held a first preparatory meeting during the conference in Egypt under the joint responsibility of the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV).
Thailand was represented by the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment (MoNRE) and the subordinate authority responsible for climate action and biodiversity conservation, the Office of Natural Resources and the Environment (ONEP).
A constructive exchange took place on recent developments in climate action and biodiversity conservation in both countries and on planned bilateral cooperation projects and general innovations in the IKI.
Background: IKI's work priorities in Thailand
The IKI supports projects in Thailand from all four funding areas, with a focus on the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions. These include, amongst others, regional projects on climate-friendly consumption and production, urban climate action and clean energy. In the area of adaptation, one regional project on strengthening the resilience of wetlands will be implemented, as well as two global projects focusing on ecosystem-based adaptation and national adaptation planning.
As part of the country-specific selection procedure (IKI country call) with Thailand in 2019, two projects are currently in preparation on adaptation in urban areas and on NDC implementation in the energy and transport sectors.
