IKI BBL Local Action: Experiences from Projects

Since 2008, the International Climate Initiative (IKI) promotes climate action and biodiversity conservation. A core principle of IKI funded projects is strong local integration, ensured by the “Local Action” regulation that requires projects to be designed, managed and carried out in close cooperation with local actors, drawing on their knowledge, expertise and networks.

Local Action aims to strengthen project effectiveness and sustainability and simultaneously build local capacities and ownership. This should be achieved through the integration of local actors from the start, involving them in the co‑design, planning, decision‑making and project implementation, ensuring that project objectives match local needs and conditions. Moreover, local organisations are uniquely positioned to make sure that project results are sustainably embedded in the partner countries and can be scaled up after the funding period ends. The collaborative model also serves as a learning platform: international implementers gain insights into local conditions, while local organisations acquire technical, administrative, and managerial skills, create jobs and expand their operational capacity. 

This IKI BBL brings together IKI‑implementing organisations to share concrete experiences of working with local implementing partners. Participants will discuss how joint project execution has reinforced local expertise, widened participation, and built institutional capacities, thereby enhancing the effectiveness and sustainability of climate‑ and biodiversity‑measures. The exchange aims to illustrate best‑practice approaches, highlight challenges, and inspire future collaborations that further strengthen local capacities within the IKI.
