New funding instrument: IKI Large Grants

The International Climate Initiative (IKI) has developed a new funding instrument. The first funding round is currently planned to start upon the occasion of the World Climate Conference in November.
Since 2008, the German federal government has been promoting projects that contribute to climate action and biodiversity conservation in developing and emerging countries via the International Climate Initiative.
The IKI Large Grants will be available as a new funding instrument in the future: Once a year, a global ideas competition will be held to generate project ideas addressing current thematic priorities. Selected projects will be implemented by consortia consisting of at least two implementing organisations.
Thematic priorities reflect the strategic orientation of the IKI
The respective thematic priorities are based on decisions arising from international negotiations conducted under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
The priority areas also reflect the strategic objectives and geographical focus for the funding programme as outlined in the “Strategy of the International Climate Initiative up to 2030”.
With regard to the geographical orientation, it is planned to integrate specific thematic priorities that strengthen bilateral cooperation with the IKI priority countries.
Planned start of the IKI Large Grants at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Brazil
The IKI Large Grants provide funding between EUR 5 million and EUR 20 million per thematic priority. The start of the first ideas competition for the IKI Large Grants is currently planned for this year's UN Climate Change Conference (COP30), which will take place in Brazil from 10 to 21 November 2025. The final decision is subject to the availability of funds in the upcoming federal budget.
The IKI funding landscape
The IKI funding landscape consists of various inter-coordinated components that in their entirety maximise the effect of the funding programme for climate action and biodiversity conservation:
The IKI Large Grants complement the already existing IKI Medium Grants and IKI Small Grants. The IKI Large Grants complement the already existing IKI Medium Grants and IKI Small Grants. Together, these instruments based on competitive selection procedures constitute the IKI Compete component. With the Medium Grants, the IKI supports smaller civil society actors in their activities and in international networking. The IKI Small Grants Programme supports local actors such as non-governmental organisations that implement small-scale projects in the areas of climate action and biodiversity.
As a further component in the IKI funding landscape, IKI Invest helps to mobilise investments in climate action and biodiversity conservation by establishing an instrument that supports financing funds and multi-donor initiatives.
With the introduction of the IKI Large Grants, the IKI Thematic Call and IKI Country Call instruments will be phased out.
