State of implementation/results

• In the thematic area ‘Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels’ (TAFF), the project provided the BMUKN with technical and strategic advice on both the Santa Marta and the Brazilian COP30 TAFF roadmap processes (background research, preparation for conference participation, etc.). Furthermore, through a grant, the project supported Germanwatch/New Climate Institute in analysing countries’ dependence on imported fossil fuels, which provided an important basis for assessing the stakeholder landscape for the Santa Marta conference and the follow-up process. In addition, approaches to producer-consumer transformation formats for phasing out fossil fuels were conceptually examined, assessed and incorporated into the BMUKN’s position. Further activities included, amongst others: supporting the BMUKN’s position on the Global Stocktake 2 in the area of TAFF; providing substantive support for the concept to strengthen the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) via a BMUKN grant; preparation of the PPCA strategy workshop for the BMUKN, as well as the development of a concept to strengthen civil society organisations in the TAFF sector in Africa to promote national TAFF roadmaps; furthermore, support for cooperation with the OECD and the Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance (BOGA).
• In the area of electrification, the project put forward proposals for conceptual improvements to the EU Commission’s ‘Electrify Now’ initiative. Furthermore, the project carried out numerous topic-specific research studies in the field of grids and storage, including on heat pumps and batteries, and made these available to the department. Overall, the BMUKN was supported with background information for its participation in the interim climate negotiations in Bonn, London Climate Action Week (LCAW) and other relevant energy and climate-related events.
• In the area of methane reduction, for example, country-specific background documents were prepared in preparation for the BMUKN’s bilateral talks with oil and gas-supplying countries on compliance with the EU Methane Regulation. Furthermore, support was provided for the BMUKN’s work with the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) and the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO), as well as with other relevant initiatives in the methane sector.
• Industrial decarbonisation/Climate Club: including an analysis of CO₂ pricing systems for the further development of Pillar 1 of the Climate Club. Furthermore, monitoring and substantive analysis of the OECD flagship project ‘Inclusive Forum on Carbon Mitigation Approaches’ (IFCMA). Additionally, supporting the BMUKN’s dialogue with economic stakeholders, particularly with a view to presenting a unified position at COP31.
