Master Plan to Harness CDM Biogas Potential in Rio Grande do Sul

The purpose of the project was to draw up a master plan for exploiting the biogas potential of livestock farming in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. A pilot project aimed at recovering energy from the biogas produced at pig farms was supported in its preparation to meet Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) standards. The focus was on developing a CDM methodology for the use of biogas as fuel. Furthermore, the project involved conducting a study, in cooperation with the Brazilian development bank CaixaRS, on the potential of biogas in Rio Grande do Sul, alongside a financing scheme for exploiting the potential of biogas using the CDM.

State of implementation/results

  • Project completed
  • Only a portion of the project's objectives has been achieved. Due to the withdrawal of important project partners during the implementation period, it was not possible to finalise the development of the CDM methodology or to produce an implementation-oriented PDD extending beyond the draft stage; in addition, there is no financing concept and a considerable amount of the project's public impact was lost since the closing event had to be cancelled.
  • The project's primary long-term impact has been the provision of advisory support regarding CDM in Brazil and a study of its potential.
