Small Grants 2026
In November, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) will launch the eighth funding round of IKI Small Grants (ISG). Please note: The eighth call for proposals is subject to funding approval.
The International Climate Initiative (IKI) supports projects that contribute to the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the Convention on Biological Diversity in developing and emerging countries. The IKI Small Grants programme supports local organisations in implementing effective climate and biodiversity projects.
Since the programme began in 2019, around 200 organisations have been selected for funding. Through their project activities, approximately 70,000 people have so far been supported in effectively strengthening their resilience to the adverse impacts of climate change. This includes measures that help communities cope better with, or prevent, drought-related crop failures and flooding.
Significant progress has also been made in biodiversity conservation. To date, approximately 100,000 hectares of terrestrial, marine and coastal ecosystems have been effectively protected or placed under sustainable management, for example through the introduction of resource-efficient practices. This area is roughly equivalent to 140,000 football pitches.
IKI Small Grants not only provides financial support for the implementation of projects by funded organisations, but also strengthens local stakeholders through capacity development. Staff from these organisations receive training in areas such as project management and fundraising.

Current status of the process
This year, the eighth global call for proposals will be launched (subject to funding approval).
The call for proposals will be announced on 22 October 2026 at CBD COP17. Interested organisations can apply from 15 November 2026 to 8 January 2027 (23:59 CET).
Projects with a funding volume of between EUR 60,000 and EUR 200,000 and a duration of one to two years are eligible for funding. Projects should be scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2028 or later.
Thematic focus: Nature-based solutions
We are looking for projects that protect, sustainably manage or restore natural ecosystems. The nature-based solutions developed through these projects should effectively and adaptively address societal challenges. They should also promote human well-being and benefit biodiversity. Indigenous Peoples and local communities (IPLCs) should be specifically empowered and involved in both the development and implementation of the projects.
Applications from organisations as well as projects proposing private sector solutions are welcome – provided they are non-profit and contribute to the objectives of IKI Small Grants.
