REN21 – Strategic intelligence to build renewable energy leadership
The project developed strategic information and provided knowledge that enabled actors in the field of renewable energies to work together strategically. The further development of the Mapping Tool served this purpose. The Mapping Tool reviewed published documents and visualised the connections between authors, organisations and thematic fields. This made current trends and developments within the network visible. Furthermore, it promoted the exchange on renewable energies with relevant decision-makers. The project enabled the renewable energy community to expand by identifying and reaching out to individuals and organisations that could strategically support the use of renewable energy. It provided a space for the community to come together and develop joint activities to strengthen renewable energy leadership.

- Project completed.
- REN21 sought to strategically broaden the renewables community, by identifying key-players and providing them with a safe space to connect and discuss. The RENdez-vous events series provided an opportunity to share different perspectives, examine potential blind spots and strengthen voices. Since August 2022, REN21 convened its community around various events:

- Africa Lunch Event at the Spanish International Renewable Energy Conference (SPIREC) - Feb. 2023 in Madrid.
- What role did renewables play in energising Africa’s healthcare? - March 2023.
- Global RENdez-vous series on the tripling up of renewable energy capacity / doubling down energy efficiency target - Oct. 2023 to Jan. 2024.
- Global RENdez-vous Series on Building Resilient Economies and Societies with Renewables - Jan. to Feb. 2025.
- Africa RENdez-vous Series on Renewables-Based Economy: What did it mean for Africa? - June 2025.
- REN21 provided its members with strategic intelligence material building on insights from its own artificial intelligence (AI) based “Influence Mapping Tool”, which tracked different topics in the renewable energy sphere.
- In efforts to share valuable knowledge with its community and inform discussions and debates, REN21 published several Strategic Intelligence Briefs since 2023:

- REN21 supported the Renewable Energy Champions Initiative, which connected national decision makers with a network of former ministers and senior officials from the Global South who have already led successful energy transitions.
- Two first Champions were onboarded: James Fletcher, Former Minister for Public Service, Information, Broadcasting, Sustainable Development, Energy, Science and Technology, Saint Lucia; and Ramón Méndez Galain, Former Energy Secretary, Uruguay.
- REN21 welcomed 35 additional members from January 2023 to March 2026, among them NGOs, governments, academia and industry associations.
