Youth for Climate Action in El Salvador (YES)
In El Salvador, the energy and agricultural sectors are the largest emitters. Mitigation plans focus on these sectors, but young people lack opportunities and capacities to participate as agents of change. The project strengthens capacities, networks and voices of young people and youth and indigenous organisations. Focusing on women, young people pilot scalable green technologies such as chemical-free farming approaches, electric tricycles, solar dryers, bio-digesters and efficient stoves for energy efficiency. They will share the model projects with representatives of the private sector, financing institutions, and decision-makers as scalable practices. The project contributes to the dissemination of innovative technologies towards a net-zero economy, but also gives young people a professional perspective. Exchange among civil society in El Salvador, Central America, and Germany and participation in international conferences disseminate model projects and foster exchange.

State of implementation/results
- Project implementation and youth engagement:
- The project launch event was held in February 2025 with participation from local government representatives, private sector actors in green energy, and young people. A total of 122 participants contributed to the start of project activities and multi-stakeholder cooperation.
- The youth environmental network was expanded, reaching communities across Ahuachapán Sur and the Sonsonate region, strengthening local participation in climate-related initiatives.
- A total of 166 young people (101 women and 65 men) participated in capacity-building processes on leadership, gender equality and civic engagement in climate action.
- Additional training modules strengthened knowledge on international and national climate governance, including El Salvador’s NDCs, as well as climate change mitigation and adaptation concepts and the use of green technologies.
- An entrepreneurship training programme supported 45 young people in developing and validating green business ideas and preparing for participation in seed capital mechanisms.
- In total, 80 green business initiatives were assessed, of which 25 are planned to receive seed capital for the implementation of green technologies in the next phase.
- A green camp enabled knowledge exchange between young entrepreneurs and private sector actors, supporting the development and refinement of business ideas.
- As a concrete pilot result, an eco-efficient stove valued at USD 800 was provided to a youth-led initiative, demonstrating the application of green technologies in practice.
- Four climate science fairs were implemented in Ahuachapán Sur and Sonsonate with 370 participants from academia, public institutions, local governments and civil society, fostering dialogue on climate action and ecosystem restoration.
- Youth presented green technology prototypes and entrepreneurial initiatives in public demonstration formats, increasing visibility of climate solutions at local level.
- A youth theatre group with 15 members was established and performed the play “Youth Committed to the Common Good” in multiple public events to raise awareness on climate and environmental protection.
- Youth representatives participated in regional forums in Central America and in preparatory processes towards COP30, strengthening youth advocacy and cross-border exchange on climate policy.
- Project communication activities achieved significant outreach on social media platforms, increasing visibility of youth-led climate and entrepreneurship initiatives.
