Coal2Green - Early retirement of coal-fired power plants: just transition & asset repurposing (C2G)
The project supports the repurposing of coal-fired power plants (CFPPs) in Indonesia to accelerate GHG emission mitigations and to enable a just transition towards a modern energy system. The project has a focus on the industrial sectors that rely on captive CFPPs, mainly nickel, aluminium, pulp & paper. By addressing technical, financial, and operational challenges, the project supports the development of viable decarbonisation pathways that maintain industrial competitiveness and mitigate emissions. Through technical assistance, the project works with public and private stakeholders, including CFPP operators, policymakers, and financial institutions, to design and advance repurposing solutions. A key part of the project is the implementation of two focus projects in partnership with selected CFPPs that showcase the technical, economic, and social feasibility of repurposing. The project also provides capacity building support, through knowledge sharing and targeted analytical inputs.
