Accelerating Egypt’s energy transition through decommissioning of fossil-fuelled power plants

The fund supports the decommissioning of fossil-fuelled capacity under the Energy Pillar of Egypt’s Nexus Water-Food-Energy programme which aims at accelerating Egypt's green energy transition by decommissioning a total of 5 GW and increasing 10 GW of renewable energy. Through Performance Incentive Payments (PIP) and technical assistance the IKI fund supports decommissioning of fossil-fuelled capacity of at least 1.5 GW. A focus of the technical assistance will be on feasibility, environmental and safety assessments, the promotion of a just energy transition for affected employees of the plants to be decommissioned, and assessment of grid enhancement for more renewables in the system.
