NBSAP Accelerator Action Account for the MatchMaking Mechanism

Many countries face significant challenges in implementing their national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs). The greatest obstacles include limited financial resources, difficulties with financial planning and the use of monitoring frameworks, as well as issues with data accessibility. Additionally, there is a lack of technical expertise and challenges with implementation at the local level. The Action Account supports the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership in overcoming these barriers. It provides targeted funding to help countries access the resources they need for the implementation of their NBSAPs. The aim is to promote actions that halt the loss of biodiversity and achieve the targets of the global biodiversity framework by 2030. At the same time, these actions contribute to combating climate change and promoting sustainable development. The Action Account also supports gender-responsive and inclusive approaches.

State of implementation/results

  • In 2025, the Accelerator Action Account (AAA) reached an important milestone. At its second Board meeting the Operations Manual was conditionally endorsed as an important step towards operationalization. This document provides the foundation for the AAA’s operation by defining its principles, procedures and criteria for support.
  • The AAA works closely with the NBSAP AP’s Global Coordination Unit (GCU), ensuring that its support is fully aligned with the country-led requests validated through the MMM and contributes directly to closing the identified gaps.
  • A governance structure has been established, with the AAA Board leading the work, and the AAA Secretariat coordinating on a day-to-day basis.
