Growing network of Climate Change Learning Labs in India
In the heart of Haryana’s Morni Hills, the newly inaugurated and IKI-supported Climate Change Learning Lab is paving the way for improved climate education through its uniquely experiential and thoughtfully designed space.
Envisioned as a hub for climate education, the new Climate Change Learning Lab presents scientifically grounded knowledge in an interactive format, aimed at raising climate awareness among diverse stakeholders—including students, government officials, community leaders, NGOs, civil society organisations, and the media.
This initiative marks the fourth Climate Change Learning Lab established in India and was officially inaugurated at the Thapli Nature Camp, Morni Hills, Haryana, on 23 July 2025. The ceremony was graced by the Honourable Chief Minister of Haryana, Shri Nayab Singh Saini, State Environment Minister Shri Rao Narbir Singh, and senior government officials.
The lab offers insights into climate challenges and solutions, covering topics such as climate science, adaptation strategies, and mitigation policies. It explores both Indian and global perspectives, with a particular focus on Haryana’s state-specific climate action plans and policy frameworks. What sets this lab apart is its interactive and experiential approach, designed to foster active community engagement and strengthen local capacity to address climate change.
Bridging the gap between awareness and action
Featuring six dynamic learning modules, the lab bridges the gap between awareness and action by transforming complex climate challenges into tangible and practical solutions. The modules include:
- Introduction to Climate Change: Explores the role of greenhouse gases, emissions reduction, and key findings from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
- Impacts of Climate Change: Examines the effects of rising temperatures on rainfall patterns, agriculture, sea levels, and everyday life.
- Global and National Climate Action: Provides a detailed overview of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Paris Agreement, India’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and the National Action Plan on Climate Change.
- Introduction to Carbon Footprint: Encourages individuals to measure and reduce their carbon footprint through mindful habits and sustainable consumption, promoting a shift from awareness to sustainable living.
- Mitigation and Adaptation Solutions: Highlights practical approaches such as renewable energy, sustainable transport, green hydrogen, nature-based solutions, and community-driven initiatives.
- Haryana’s State Action Plan on Climate Change (SAPCC): Introduces the state's strategic climate plan, which outlines 73 targeted actions—37 for adaptation, 28 for mitigation, and 8 addressing both.
Overview of Climate Change Learning Labs across India
Climate Change Learning Labs are already operational in three other Indian states:
- Bihar – Inaugurated in July 2022 at Patna Zoo
- Kerala – Inaugurated in August 2023 at the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM), Kozhikode
- Gujarat – Inaugurated in February 2024 at the Gujarat Council of Science City (GCSC), Department of Science and Technology, Ahmedabad
These labs are funded under the IKI’s SPIPA project and co-funded through the IKI India Interface project.
