With its new learning pack "Urban Green Spaces", Deutsche Welle aims to help students living in urban areas to discover and learn about green spaces in the city.

Every second person in the world lives in an urban area and the United Nations predicts this figure will rise to almost two-thirds of the global population by 2050. At the same time, climate change is taking its toll on people. Record heat, flooding, smog, and climate-related illnesses are a growing problem for those living in densely populated cities.

One possible way of countering the negative impacts of climate change in urban areas is to make them greener. Fields, parks, abandoned plots and even rooftops and allotments are important because areas not sealed by concrete, for instance, store water, ensure cooler temperatures and help to keep the air clean.

This learning pack by Deutsche Welle is an opportunity for teachers and their students aged 12 to 16 to discover urban green spaces and to find out what they can do to help establish more green areas in towns and cities. This learning pack contains:

  • One booklet with worksheets and explanatory handouts
  • 16 quiz cards
  • Five videos and three articles

The learning pack can be downloaded in English, German and Spanish on Deutsche Welle's website.

It is the third of 10 learning packs that will be launched by 2022 to tackle key aspects of climate change and environmental protection. The packs are being compiled by the Global Ideas team at German broadcaster Deutsche Welle as part of the German Environment Ministry (BMU)’s International Climate Initiative (IKI).
