IKI Large Grants 2025: New funding instrument strengthens international climate action and biodiversity conservation
With the first IKI Large Grants Call, the German Federal Government is funding projects on climate change mitigation, adaptation to climate change and biodiversity conservation in developing and emerging countries.
The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) launched the first IKI Large Grants (ILG) Call at the UN Climate Change Conference in Belém, Brazil (COP30):
The focus here is on searching for ideas for projects in developing and emerging countries that contribute to the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, the conservation of biodiversity and the adaptation to the impacts of climate change.
The call comprises a total of 11 priorities; one to two projects are planned for each priority; grants of up to EUR 20 million are envisaged for each project.
Ideas competition as a first step towards funding
The IKI Large Grants Call 2025 starts with an ideas competition:
German and international grant recipients and federal implementing organisations are invited to participate. Interested organisations can submit project outlines on one of the eleven thematic and country priorities. The aim is to identify outstanding concepts that effectively support the global climate and biodiversity targets and sustainably involve local partners.
Thematic and country priorities reflect the strategic orientation of the IKI
The ILG 2025 call covers a broad spectrum of topics. These include, for example, the transformation of energy systems, climate-intelligent land use, the strengthening of ecosystem-based adaptation and the promotion of green, resilient economic development.
The prioritisation of the call is based on the results of international negotiations held in connection with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Convention on Biological Diversity. It reflects the strategic orientation of the funding programme, which is formulated in the Strategy of the International Climate Initiative up to 2030. This also includes the integration of three country priorities, which address the IKI priority countries Mexico, India and South Africa this year.
About the IKI Large Grants
The IKI Large Grants fund large-volume projects in developing and emerging countries, which reach beyond individual actions and bring about systemic changes, for instance by providing support for national climate strategies, involving private investment or establishing institutional capacities in partner countries.
The new funding instrument combines the previous thematic and country calls and continues to effectively advance developments that have already been initiated.
The IKI Large Grants complement the existing IKI Medium Grants and IKI Small Grants. Together, these three competitive funding instruments form IKI Compete.
