Start of IKI Medium Grants 2025: Funding for civil society climate action projects in the Global South

In the sixth round of the IKI Medium Grants, the German Federal Government is funding projects on the thematic priorities of “Climate action through circular economy” and “Adaptation to climate change”.

The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) launched the sixth funding round of IKI Medium Grants (IMG) at the UN Climate Change Conference in Belém, Brazil (COP30). With a total volume of up to EUR 8 million, the German federal government is supporting civil society organisations, academic institutions and non-profit companies based in Germany that apply to implement innovative projects for climate action and adaptation to the impacts of climate change together with local partners in the Global South.

The ideas competition (call) starts on 17 November 2025 and ends on 20 January 2026. Up to twelve projects will be funded which contribute to the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Focus on circular economy and adaptation to climate change

The 2025 call addresses two thematic priorities:

Climate action through circular economy – local approaches

The project ideas seek to promote resource conservation, waste avoidance and recycling at local level. The perspectives of women, young people and marginalised groups will be taken into consideration here.

In addition to the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, participatory and inclusive approaches aim to create sustainable value chains and open up economic opportunities for local actors.

“Towards locally-led ecosystem-based adaptation” – strengthening of local capacities for climate change adaptation

In this thematic priority, projects are funded that enable local communities to develop and implement climate change adaptation measures.

The main focus here is on concepts targeting ecosystem-based adaptation, the combination of local knowledge and scientific data, and the strengthening of ecological, social and economic resilience.

Involvement of civil society as the key to success

The prioritisation of the IKI Medium Grants supports the implementation of the “Strategy of the International Climate Initiative up to 2030”, in which the involvement of local actors and civil society organisations is emphasised as a key success factor.

You will find all information on the thematic priorities, terms and conditions of participation and the application process on our website.
