Cover "The Global Flood Protection Benefits of Mangroves"

In this paper, the authors present the current flood risks on 700,000 km of subtropical coastlines and the benefits that mangrove forests provide for 15 million people worldwide in flood protection. The modelling shows that annual risks amount to 730 billion US dollars and mangroves provide a benefit of 65 billion US dollars. It has been possible to identify 100 coastal areas where mangroves avert property damage of 100 million US dollars or more each year. These are clearly priority areas where the protection and restoration of mangroves will bring high benefits to people, property and national budgets.
