Adapting to Climate Change by Improving Water Management and Irrigation Productivity

The project objective was to improve the capacities of Ethiopian farmers to adapt to climate change. It was being implemented as a triangular cooperation effort between Ethiopia, Israel and Germany. The project included components for promoting sustainable water resource management, improving irrigation to foster productivity, and utilising treated waste water.

State of implementation/results

  • Project completed
  • Integrated water resource management introduced in 12 water catchment areas with stakeholders, measures: physical restoration of the irrigation infrastructure and introduction of improved irrigation techniques
  • 2,055 households reached with advising and training measures, all user groups have improved their water management
  • Management plans for restored irrigation facilities in the water catchment areas have been developed, implementation has begun
  • Irrigated agricultural land in 4 water catchment area increased from 175 ha to 320 ha
  • Expected increase in agricultural productivity of more than 20 % in 735 households which benefit from increased irrigation facilities, another 1,320 peasant households on other sites also benefit in terms of production through improved water management
  • Feasibility study for the use of treated waste water conducted on 5 sites in May 2011
