Climate Adaptation in Cities: Water-sensitive Urban Planning

Brazilian cities and municipalities need inclusive, science-based urban adaptation models to address water stress and excess. Through nature-based (NbS) and ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) approaches, it targets the adaptive capacities and resilience of vulnerable communities, catalysing systemic changes in urban water management and fostering climate-safe urban development. It is guided by the Brazilian NDC and supports several Brazilian government initiatives for sustainable and climate-resilient cities. The project has a three-pronged approach. Firstly, it implements evidence-driven urban pilots. Secondly, it engages local governments and communities to develop participatory climate adaptation plans relevant for cities. Thirdly, it delivers capacity-building and peer-to-peer learning to local governments to enhance regulatory frameworks and mainstream resilient urban development
