Development and management of NAMA in India
NAMAs reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable development in emerging and developing countries. These measures not only contribute to climate protection, they can also improve urban infrastructure and increase competitiveness. The project supported the Indian government in the development of two NAMA concepts, including associated MRV systems in the waste and forestry sectors, both of which are vital if India is to achieve its climate targets. The project followed a participatory approach that brought together various stakeholders from the public and private sectors. This multi-stakeholder approach created the necessary broad-based support for a proper and successful implementation of the NAMAs. The project supported the establishment of optimised coordination structures for the development of NAMAs and was also developing a NAMA manual to this end.

State of implementation/results
- Project completed.
- In close consultation with the partner, sectors for the development of NAMA proposals were identified and on this basis two concrete NAMA concepts, including respective MRV systems, were developed in the fields of forestry and waste. Both sectors were also prominently named in the Indian NDC.
- The waste NAMA focused on the use of municipal waste as a substitute for fuel in the cement industry. The goal of the forest NAMA aimed at was an improved forest management by enhancing the the sustainable use of firewood. Parts of the forest NAMA have been piloted from September 2017 onwards in Assam; the Assam state government supported the pilot phase.
- Building on the preparation of the waste NAMA, the Indian partners have also taken up the area of waste prominently in their cooperation with the Partnership for Market Readiness (World Bank). Both NAMAs were named in the Market Readiness Proposal; waste was one of the topics of the cooperation under the PMR.
- For the NAMA preparation, sector relevant stakeholder groups were consulted; the results were used for further development of the concepts.
- Successful launch of the "Shop with your waste" campaign in Goa October 2020; opening of shops where waste can be exchanged for everyday items.
- In 2020: Completion of waste assessments of 80 neighbourhoods in Panaji/Goa. Forest NAMA: Introduction of improved cooking technologies (ICTs) in households (15,000) to reduce carbon emissions (84,000 tCO2). The deployment of ICTs in 21,535 households in five districts was completed at the end of December 2020.
