Education for climate change resilience in rural schools
Brazil’s Amapá state is home to one of the most well-preserved parts of the Amazon rainforest. The local economy is mainly based on plant-based extraction activities, such as açaí, Brazil nuts, and rubber. Risks from unsustainable economic activities threaten forest preservation and make the local population more vulnerable to regional climate change. This project focuses on rural schools in the Amazon rainforest, and incorporates climate change, forest conservation, and biodiversity in the syllabus. It promotes sustainable forest management in the region, encourages young people to engage in rural management, and tackles the pressing challenges of climate change. Activities include developing educational materials, teacher training, and exchange programs for schools. Working closely with local schools and raising awareness within the broader population, the project has a far-reaching impact and is deeply integrated in the local community.
