Ensuring a People-Centered Energy Transition in Africa Through Civil Society Engagement

This project aimed at strengthening the role of civil society in the promotion and implementation of sustainable energy transition initiatives as well as renewable energy related climate policy commitments across five African countries to engage in renewable energy policy and strengthen their voice at the domestic, continent-wide and global level. As primary target groups African Civil Society Organsations that engage in climate change and renewable energy, were enabled to engage in a more coordinated and effective manner on issues concerning the implementation of sustainable energy initiatives. The project organised trainings; developed information materials on renewable energy technology and policy options; strengthened an effective civil society network on renewable energy and developed a monitoring tool that allows civil society to independently track the progress of sustainable energy initiatives.

State of implementation/results

  • Project completed.
  • A capacity building workshop took place on the 4th of December 2023 on the sidelines of COP28 in Dubai targeting civil society and organizations from the five project countries and beyond. The workshop expanded on the content factsheets and provided an opportunity for in-person exchanges.
  • The project worked with the African Development Bank (AfDB) to create the Bank-Civil Society Coalition on Climate Change and Energy, a forum for shaping policies and joint actions. A project representative co-chairs the coalition.
  • Research in five project countries has increased understanding of renewable energy governance challenges and opportunities and now informs the advocacy work of project partners.
  • Project achievements led to improved policy frameworks for people-centred energy investments in Kenya after successfully influencing the integration of energy and climate change components in the development plans of three counties.
  • Engagements with Cameroon policy and lawmakers increased investment in decentralised renewable energy solutions to bring power to off-grid communities nationwide.
  • The project mobilised women and young people to participate in shaping the developing Nigeria’s Just Transition Strategy, leading to a greater consideration of their needs in the final document.
  • The project has strengthened the African Coalition for Sustainable Energy and Access (ACSEA), a movement of African civil society organisations advocating a people-centred energy transition in Africa.
  • Participation in the Pan-African Summit on Just Transition and Energy Democracy (PASJTED) 16/05/2022-17/05/2022 in Nairobi with a contribution about decentralized renewable energy systems replacing the webinar planned in connection to the first factsheet. This contribution contained a 15-minute presentation followed by a plenary discussion and the chairing of a working group. A panel contribution about hydrogen was also held at this occasion. The participation of the event was important because it contributed to a unification of voices of various stakeholders in the process towards a just transition and energy democracy in Africa. The summit followed the objective to take influence on policy making through multistakeholder involvement.
  • The project contributed insights on decentralised renewable energy during a training of trainers organised by Women Engage for a Common Future (WECF). This activity facilitated knowledge sharing. (12/04/2022-13/04/2022)
