Escape Climate Change Brazil - Game-based Learning for innovative Climate Communication in Brazil
Brazil is one of the most important players in the fight against climate change. It is crucial to support Brazilian public opinion in favour of strict climate protection. Some educational initiatives on climate change are already in place, as the issue is discussed in Brazilian schools. However, innovative educational approaches are still lacking in many ways. The project develops a game-based learning tool (the game “Escape Climate Change”), based on an already tested concept. It is adapted to the Brazilian reality and also addresses interrelated topics such as social justice and racial equality. Teaching materials, which include the game and a teaching manual, are being distributed to schools in two pilot regions. The target group are students between 14 and 18 years of age, teachers and multipliers. The project will implement knowledge exchange and networking in Brazil.

State of implementation/results
- The game is currently being translated and adapted to the Brazilian context. Numerous discussions have been held with other potential support partners in Brazil, including the Roberto Marinho Foundation, the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of Cities and the United Nations University.
- The main interim result of the project (as of September 2025) is without a doubt the adaptation, development, production, and testing of the Game. In Brazil, the name of the “Escape Climate Change” game was adapted to “Missão Climática: Jovens em Ação”. At the moment, the game is in the production phase and will be distributed to educational institutions by beginning of 2026.
- Key achievements since the start of the project include:
- Adaptation and development of game content in line with the Brazilian reality;
- Development of new game mechanics and challenges;
- Creation of the game's layout and visual identity, choice of materials, testing of materials’ resistance;
- Testing with approximately 340 students and 23 teachers in two pilot regions, Recife and Rio de Janeiro;
- Data collecting through tailor-made assessment questionnaires, plus one-on-one interviews and field observation;
- New institutional partners have joined the project, such as the Roberto Marinho Foundation, the Botanic Garden Institute, and the National School of Tropical Botany;
- Presentation of the project at two networking meetings organized by GIZ and at a conference held by the German Embassy in Rio de Janeiro.
