Guyana Shield Initiative/ Avoided Deforestation through consolidation and creation of protected areas in the Guianan Region
The aim of the project was the protection and sustainable management of important rainforest areas within the Guiana Shield, a cross-border region shared by three countries: Suriname, Guyana and Brazil. The project further intended to plan and equip protection areas in northern Brazil. In addition, national forest inventories were supported, using maps and satellite-based control systems. Building on these inventories, pilot forest conservation projects have been developed.

State of implementation/results
- Project completed
- Guyana established a MRV-System on which a system of performance-based payments for forest conservation was based on.
- Seven Brazilian protected areas with a total of 15,8 million hectares have officially adopted management plans.
- Surinam successfully submitted the Readiness Preparation Proposal (R-PP) to the Carbon Fund of the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility.
- As a result of a regional knowledge exchange experiences from neighbouring countries were shared and could be used.
- Training measures were implemented with the state environmental authorities, municipalities and local authorities.
