Lake Tanganyika Biodiversity Conservation Network for Nature, Communities, and Climate Resilience (LaTaBioCoN)

Lake Tanganyika is a global biodiversity hot spot supporting more than 12 million people but faces connected threats of climate change and increasing resource use. To conserve ecosystems and biodiversity, the project supports communities and relevant stakeholders in the partner countries to develop and sustainably manage a network of protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs) for livelihood and biodiversity benefits. Through the identification and management of key biodiversity areas, ecosystems and communities will be supported in their resilience to climate change The network is strengthened by locally-led nature-based solutions that improve fishing, farming, and forest livelihoods and outcomes for natural resource-dependent communities, women and youth.

State of implementation/results

  • The preparation phase of the project includes the following topics:
    • The project will analyse and update the project context and design for a successful implementation, i.e., synergy effects with other projects will be identified and data collected to ensure that the project builds on the latest developments and local needs.
    • Relevant stakeholders will be informed, consulted, and involved throughout the entire preparation phase.
    • The exact project areas will be coordinated with the target groups and political partners.
    • Work plans and budgets will be developed, environmental and social standards will be reviewed, and measures to mitigate any risks will be established. Several workshops, field visits, and meetings involving consortium partners and various interest groups are planned in the three countries to verify the project planning process and the impact logic and to develop effective measures for the main phase.
  • After the preparation phase, a decision is made on further funding by the International Climate Initiative.
