Leapfrogging to Zero Emission Transport (LEAP)

Africa is at the start of a steep motorisation curve. Increasing numbers of imported internal combustion vehicles are leading to rising oil import bills, air pollution and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Kenya, Senegal and South Africa are keen to promote e-mobility, establish local value chains and create jobs for men and women. The project accelerates the electrification of vehicle fleets by establishing climate-aware, gender-responsive and regionally harmonised frameworks to enable e-mobility. This includes building government capacity for the implementation of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC)s, a pan-African gender-inclusive e-mobility plan, and international dialogue on investment opportunities. By avoiding GHG emissions that would result from rapid motorisation with conventional vehicles, it contributes to emission reductions of up to 146 Mt CO2 compared to a baseline scenario (ITF 2023).
