Monitoring of climate-relevant biodiversity in protected areas in consideration of reduction and adaptation measures

The project assisted to coordinate biodiversity monitoring in selected Brazilian protected areas and to provide the information relevant to decisions on mitigation. Its activities built on current and projected research programmes. Essential activities were: on-site monitoring in at least 15 protected areas (Amazonas, Mata Atlântica, the Cerrado Savanna) with input from the local population; harmonisation of databanks and articulation of the institutions involved; development of methods for improved, more cost-effective assessment of carbon reservoir dynamics; training and upgrading of relevant administrative bodies as well as representatives from non-governmental organisations (NGOs), the private sector and the local population.

State of implementation/results

  • Project completed
  • Biodiversity monitoring established in 19 protected areas by ICMBio and through the ARPA Programme (Áreas Protegidas da Amazonia) will be adopted by 20 additional protected areas; from 2015 onwards the monitoring is supposed to be obligatory for all protected areas in the Amazon
  • Working group on the “Integration of information systems” founded that facilitates close cooperation of different relevant institutions; the Brazilian information system for biodiversity (SiBBR) coordinates the different databases
  • Study on monitoring of environmental services and a guideline for practitioners developed; 30 project executing organizations trained in implementing the monitoring protocols
  • Training cycle developed and included into the curriculum of training center ACADEBIO, several courses have been realized
  • A local instrument for biodiversity data input in protected areas and a web portal for analyzing and presenting monitoring data prepared
