Nature‑Based Solutions (NbS) on Islands under Urbanisation Pressure

In Puerto Ayora on the Galápagos Islands, marine pollution and urbanisation are major challenges. The project strengthens coastal biodiversity and improves the livelihoods of residents. Binding clean-up plans, trained clean-up teams and regular monitoring keep the coast largely plastic-free. At the same time, the project promotes the restoration of coral reefs and strengthens marine biodiversity. On pilot farms near the coast, it promotes native plants and keeps invasive species in check. Integrated management plans guide farming practices, and young people receive training in sustainable cultivation methods. Community campaigns encourage environmentally aware behaviour, reduce single-use plastic and promote local food production. The project continuously collects data to track progress and transfers the developed approaches to other islands and regions facing similar challenges.
