Promotion of the ‘Conservando Juntos’ tropical forest protection programme in Peru

The ‘Conservando Juntos’ (‘Conserving Together’) programme, which was established as a consequence of Peru’s new environmental policy in 2009, provided for an innovative instrument whereby transfer payments from the national budget and other sources were made to those indigenous communities that undertook to conserve their tropical forests (total of around 10.5 million hectares). To achieve this goal, the project developped locally adapted technical and socio-economic criteria and methods as well as a monitoring system for the compensation payments. The participating communities were advised and trained for implementation of this instrument. The project had pilot character for countries of the Amazon such as Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia and strengthened the political and economic position of the indigenous population.
