Protected Area Management Enhancement in the Philippines

The project supported the Philippine Government in implementing the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) by cooperating with local partners to improve the legal framework for protecting and managing designated protected zones in marine and terrestrial ‘key biodiversity areas’. These areas are of particular international significance in conserving biodiversity. The project enhanced the protected area management capacity of the Philippine environment ministry through training measures and workshops for sharing experience. In addition, it helped improving administrative structures and processes in existing protected areas and established new terrestrial and marine protected areas. It cooperated closely with local communities and gave particular consideration to the concerns of women and indigenous populations.

State of implementation/results

Project completed.
About 6000 participants took part in 141 training courses and other capacity building events on various topics (e.g. economic valuations of protected areas).
Current management effectiveness has been recorded and evaluated in a nationwide survey in 61 protected areas.
A strategy with specific selection criteria has been produced with a view to establishing 100 new protected areas.

The wetland area “Negros Occidental Coastal Wetlands Conservation Area” (NOCWCA) was acknowledged as a new Ramsar Site in 2016 and as part of the new “East Asian-Australasian Flyway” in 2017.
